If I ever get married, I’m going to ask for donations to the Human Rights Campaign instead of gifts. Especially if other Americans in the LGBTQ community still do not have the chance to get married legally by the time I’m ready to get married. A crockpot and a new set of dishes are worth nothing in comparison to the freedom to love.

After disappointment in North Carolina’s recent actions, President Obama has said that he personally believes that same-sex couples should be able to get married under United States law. I would not call this declaration an act of bravery, however; being a decent human and standing up for equal rights should not have to be rewarded with high praise. It should be expected.

Either way, I think this development is a reason to celebrate and to reaffirm my support for President Obama in the upcoming elections. I think you should all do the same.

In light of recent events in North Carolina, sharing these sentiments with everyone I know seems particularly important. One more state has confirmed the definition of marriage as a union only between a man and a woman. One more state has denied a whole portion of American citizens civil rights and equality under the law.

Marriage under the law, rather, should be more generally defined as a union between two people who are deeply committed to each other. Love should know no boundaries. Laws in the United States should be gender-blind.

“Tolerance” implies some level of disapproval on the part of the person doing the “tolerating.” In order for the LGBTQ community to achieve equal rights under United States law, tolerance must give way to more willing acceptance by fellow Americans.

Recently, there has been internet hubbub about one Harvard physician’s story about the struggles he faced being gay in the field of medicine. This issue is relevant to the whole LGBTQ community because the anti-LGBTQ sentiment that persists in some aspects of the medical field can affect not only the lives of those working in the field, but also the quality of care received by patients, LGBTQ or otherwise.

For example, LGBTQ people and people who practice alternative sexual practices can sometimes face unique medical problems that are covered only briefly in most medical school curricula. Medical students spend more time learning about extremely rare genetic diseases than about the medical problems faced daily by people in the LGBTQ community.

“Born this way” has taken on many connotations over the past year. It is a blog with childhood stories of LGBTQ people. It is the name of Lady Gaga’s album. These popular messages have given many people a sense of empowerment—it’s okay to be who we are, and we should love ourselves. I would not call this kind of self-love “narcissism,” but rather, I would call “born this way” a form celebration of each individual.

All kinds of couples should be able to marry under U.S. law, and these couples should be provided with benefits equal to those that heterosexual couple currently have. Love is love, and commitment is commitment.

This is a simplified version of what I will make and post in a few minutes. Not everybody is represented here!
Over the next week (or two!), I will be creating posts to raise awareness about issues relevant to women, gender, and sexuality.
Do you have a cool idea for a simple graphical representation of these issues? I welcome your suggestions! Keep in mind that I would like to stick to my current posting format for now (take a look at some of my previous posts if you’re unsure).
