If I ever get married, I’m going to ask for donations to the Human Rights Campaign instead of gifts. Especially if other Americans in the LGBTQ community still do not have the chance to get married legally by the time I’m ready to get married. A crockpot and a new set of dishes are worth nothing in comparison to the freedom to love.

In light of recent events in North Carolina, sharing these sentiments with everyone I know seems particularly important. One more state has confirmed the definition of marriage as a union only between a man and a woman. One more state has denied a whole portion of American citizens civil rights and equality under the law.

Marriage under the law, rather, should be more generally defined as a union between two people who are deeply committed to each other. Love should know no boundaries. Laws in the United States should be gender-blind.
